Acts 29 Northeast Regional

endure

The Acts 29 Northeast Regional conference will be held Monday September 26th in Troy New York.   This years Keynote speaker, Elliot Grudem (director of the Acts 29  network and author of Christian Beliefs: Twenty Basics Every Christian Should Know.) will be unpacking the concept of endurance in the life of a pastor.  This conference is a great opportunity for pastors and teachers to see the mettle of their hearts as they send forth the gospel. It also grants non pastors the chance to see inside the heart of endurance that they may better endure themselves and show greater empathy for those  in vocational ministry. Rethinking Christmas

As a faith family, we’ve been rethinking Christmas. The more that we focus on what God has done for us in Christ, the more active we become. Gospel-centrality does not lead to a lack of effort – quite the opposite is true. The more we sing and say and preach and read about the freely given, unmerited favor and love of God the more we want to be like Him.

So we’ve been rethinking Christmas. Rethinking leads to questions:

  • What if my relationship with Jesus changed the way I saved and spent my money?
  • What if it went further than not buying so much for myself?
  • What if the love I’ve received caused me to want to spend less so that I could give more away to others who need it more?

A helpful tool for us this year has been Advent Conspiracy. The Advent Conspiracy is a movement that started in 2006 among five churches. They wanted to call their faith communities to four priorities during the Advent season: Worship Fully, Spend Less, Give More, and Love All.

As Americans we spend a ridiculous amount of money celebrating this holiday – $450 billion. The average family here spends $1000, not to mention the debt hanging around on their credit cards months after. What does that say about our focus? How does the gospel change our view of this Christmas season?

My family and I are enjoying spending less this Christmas then taking that money and giving it away as an act of love and service to God and others. We are making relationships a priority as we make our Christmas lists. We have more time to worship God for sending His Son. We are amazed about the opportunities that flow out of sharing with others about the faith family we love, that is approaching Christmas from a different angle, at least different for us.
